Sometimes it is necessary to weight the laterals lighter, due to the anatomical location of a tumor. In this case, the physician has requested that the lateral be weighted less, to give the liver less dose. By giving the laterals a weighting of .25 rather than 1, you can significantly reduce the mean dose to the liver, while keeping the cord under 5000 cGy. Note, when decreasing the lateral weights, it increases the dose AP/PA. It is a balance to find the appropriate weights for each beam.
